Towns & Cities of New Zealand

New Zealand’s towns and cities are often summed up in quick tourist blurbs, Auckland’s the big city, Wellington’s the windy one, Christchurch has a rebuild story, and Dunedin? Well, that’s where the students go wild. But those one-liners don’t tell the real story.

I’ve spent decades living in New Zealand, and I’ve walked these streets more times than I can count. I’ve order toasted sandwiches from a local club skifield in the South Island, surprisingly they made it to order, got caught in Wellington’s sideways rain (which no umbrella can survive), and debated whether Canterbury Rugby is truly that one-eyed. (spoiler: they’re not, just passionate). I know the best places to stop for a pie on a long road trip, which towns still have a proper old-school fish and chip shop, and where you’ll find the most underrated coastal views that don’t have a single tour bus in sight.

From Auckland to Invercargill, Napier to New Plymouth, and everywhere in between, these are the places I’ve been, the stories I’ve collected, and the experiences that make New Zealand’s towns more than just dots on a map.

This isn’t a list of “Top 10 Places to Visit” – it’s a guide to New Zealand’s towns and cities as they really are. The quirks, the surprises, and the places that don’t make the glossy brochures but should.
