Celebrate Matariki at Tūroa Ski Area: Snow, Stars & Whānau

Matariki - 20 June 2025

Māori New Year celebrations and alpine adventures await in Ohakune

Thousands are expected to head to Tūroa Ski Area and the Central Plateau this Matariki long weekend – combining winter fun with cultural connection in the heart of the North Island.

Kicking off at dawn on Friday 20 June, the official Matariki mā Puanga broadcast will air live from Tirorangi Marae in Ohakune. The traditional hautapu ceremony will be streamed nationwide on TVNZ, Whakaata Māori, RNZ, and other platforms, marking the beginning of the Māori New Year with reflection and meaning.

Up on the mountain, Tūroa will open Alpine Meadow on Saturday 21 June for beginner skiing and snowboarding, thanks to solid snowmaking conditions this week. More than 2,000 visitors are expected to enjoy the first turns of winter, with snow play and sightseeing also on offer.

“This Matariki, we’re proud to offer a place where people can come together, reconnect, and create new memories on the maunga,” says Jono Dean, CEO of Tūroa Ski Area.

Whether you’re new to snow or returning for another winter, Tūroa provides a welcoming space for all. And it’s not just about skiing – Ohakune HQ will be open on the public holiday, with Freddie’s Tasting Room, retail stores, and sightseeing options available throughout the weekend.

Seven-day operations begin from Saturday 28 June, with terrain and lift openings progressing as conditions allow.

Don’t miss the early morning skies

The Ruapehu region is one of the best places in New Zealand to spot the Matariki star cluster, just before sunrise. It’s the perfect way to begin the day: a quiet moment under the stars before the mountain comes to life.

From sunrise ceremonies to snowy fun, Tūroa and Ohakune are the perfect Matariki destination – a place to reflect, reconnect, and embrace the season ahead.
