Shanghai Symphony Orchestra - Two Nights only in Tāmaki Makaurau
Here we go – the first show for the 2026 Auckland Arts Festival has been announced, and it’s nothing short of world-class.
The legendary Shanghai Symphony Orchestra – the oldest orchestra in Asia, founded way back in 1879 – is heading to Auckland for two exclusive nights this March. Led by renowned conductor Long Yu, the SSO has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the BBC Proms. Now, they’re bringing that global prestige right here to Aotearoa.
This will be the first international symphony orchestra to play in Auckland in 25 years. That’s not just a booking – it’s a milestone.
Expect a rich programme of classical favourites (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov), the highlight of both performances will be Chinese Kitchen: A Feast of Flavours, a vibrant ten-movement centrepiece inspired by signature Chinese dishes.
