The Christchurch Gondola, Christchurch
Visit the Christchurch Gondola and enjoy spectacular views of Christchurch, Lyttelton and beyond. See the breathtaking panoramic views from the summit station of the Southern Alps, Canterbury Plains and Pegasus Bay. Make sure you make time to visit the observation deck. The view is definitely worth it, and an excellent place for lunch at the Red Rock Cafe.
There are plenty of great walking tracks to explore from the Gondola Summit Station. We did the 15-minute stroll around Summit Station and over the back to view Lyttleton. Other trails take a few hours to complete.
The Christchurch Gondola - Celebrating 30 years of operation
Initially known as the Mt Cavendish Gondola when it opened on 24 November 1992, the Gondola is a popular attraction for Christchurch locals and visitors to the city over the past three decades. Planning for the complex had been underway for 20 years prior to construction, and once the building was completed 16,000 native tussocks were returned to the site.
The Gondola was purchased by local owners and operators The Wood Scenic Line in 2005, and has undergone various challenges including the Christchurch earthquakes and the impact of Covid-19.
Christchurch Attractions CEO Sue Sullivan says, “We are thrilled to have reached this significant milestone, especially after the many challenges along with way. Our team have deeply appreciated the ongoing support shown to us, particularly by our local visitors, throughout the decades. We look forward to continuing to share this special place with our guests in the future.”
Getting there
The Christchurch Gondola is located just 15 minutes from Christchurch and offers access to a large carpark at the base station, accessible to Gondola customers.
