Mt Hutt is officially New Zealand’s Best Ski Resort for the 10th year in a row*. At an altitude of 2086m with a 683 vertical drop Mt Hutt boasts the South Island’s highest chairlift, leg-burning runs and some of the country’s most spectacular views.

Mt Hutt to Open 31 May 2025
Winter has officially clocked in early. Mt Hutt to open on May 31 – the earliest the Canterbury ski field has opened since 2009. A decent dump of autumn snow (around 1.2 metres of it) means the slopes are ready, and Mt Hutt is first out of the gate for the 2025 ski season in New Zealand.

At an altitude of 2086m with a 683 vertical drop Mt Hutt boasts the South Island’s highest chairlift, leg-burning runs and some of the country’s most spectacular views. Mt Hutt Ski Area is about an hour’s drive and 115 km from Christchurch.
Mt Hutt is striving to become carbon neutral
To achieve this, substantial investment has been put into upgrading equipment, waste management initiatives and native planting. Another goal has been to bring back the kea to Mt Hutt. In the winter of 2020, this was achieved.
The first kea in three years visited the mountain, which thrilled the team and guests. Mt Hutt hopes to encourage more native birds back to the mountain by creating a habitable environment through pest eradication and native planting.
